Chess - The Game of Life

“Life is like a game of chess. To win you have to make a move. Knowing which move to make comes with insight and knowledge, and by learning the lessons that are accumulated along the way. We become each and every piece within the game called life”.

-Allan Rufus

Like life, chess consists of a very restricted number of moves. Making use of those moves in a good way is important, but when you do make mistakes, as everyone does, its vital to let go of those qualms, learning a lesson and not repeating them. Life’s too short to regret what you did previous and have no way to change it.

"Oh yes, the past can hurt. But from the way I see it, you can either run from it, or learn from it." -Rafiki

As discussed, chess is not simply a game, but a way of life. It teaches us a valuable lesson. It’s a laboratory for decision-making process under pressure, with needed calculation, creativity, strategy and analysis, among others.

Creativity is a valuable skill while playing chess. The more creative we are, the better we are as a player. Every move needs a plan and to think further ahead than just that one move, same goes for life. If we are not creative enough, we could be missing out on living the best life.

Chess is a fixed time limit game. Some of the decisions we need to

make during chess, we have to be quick about, especially if running out of time. There are times in life as well where we need to make quick decisions which can lead to undesirable results at times. The better decisions we take within a short time, the better life we lead.

Chess is also about a game of sacrifice. No game of chess can end without losing at least one piece. Sacrifices can be from loosing the knight to gain advantage for the queen, to making the choice to go to college while working full time or continue to work the job ladder.

Sometimes we lose. Chess is not an exception. Its okay to lose but more important is what we learn from our mistakes. Life and chess are similar in this matter. Sometimes in life we lose, sometimes in many ways, but we need to analyze our mistakes and learn what we can from it. We should change our thinking from win or lose, to win or learn. It is always important how we deal with our losses. We get up, dust yourself off, and get to work.

We need to be confident in the moves we make. Chess is about making strong moves and sticking with them. Same goes for life. If we plan to do something, we need to stand our ground and fight for what we believe in. Rise up from the underground, be assertive, liberate, and act to change things and make a difference. You can run your life, or someone else can run it for you, so make that choice.

Last thing I want to touch on is that every game we play should have fun. Both in the game of chess and in everyday life too, we should do what makes us happy and enjoy everything we do. Life is too short to hate your life. Sometimes some happiness is needed to be sacrificed to get to the end goal, but consistent unhappiness should realize a change might be needed.

The role for the King isn’t as predominant as other chess pieces, but he’s unique in the way that he is the only piece that can never be captured. He in-fact does not have a role in the game chess, he is the game. I want you to remember that you are the King. Life is your game of chess so make your moves.
